People Before Profit, a poem for Tony Benn

I’ve never really cried when folk I don’t know
have sadly passed away,
But this morning I awoke and the news had just broke
and I cried for Tony Benn today,
Tony was a man who believed the power and the powerful
should always be held to account,
With the upmost conviction he was the lodestar for the left
a champion of the powerless without doubt,
Tony was a man that made it clear
that if there’s money to spend on bombing people,
There must be money for those in need
for a society that he sought to be treated as equal,
Tony said in war time they do whatever is required
cos no general ever worries about spend,
He said in peace time we should do whatever is required
and for the needs of the people we all must transcend,
Tony was a man that cared for welfare and education
never a gun a tank a missile or rocket,
Tony was a man a passionate man
that said always put people before profit.

  1. I also shed a tear. Great man, not many of the true labour greats left to defend the working class people. Sad day indeed. Your words are a great tribute indeed.
